Ross McCormack shocked Celtic didn’t re-sign Hoops hero ‘tailor-made’ for Brendan Rodgers

Celtic are now starting to see some excitement on the wings.

In truth, it is only really coming from one player, with Sebastian Tounekti making an outstanding start to life in Glasgow.

Everyone is aware that Celtic made a mess of the 2025 summer transfer window, and one of the issues and areas of concern was the wide players.

With Jota’s long-term injury and Nicolas Kuhn leaving for Como at the start of July, it was pretty obvious that wide players were needed, and Ross McCormack thinks one man was staring them in the face.

Celtic should have re-signed Patrick Roberts

67 Hail Hail did suggest that Celtic should re-sign Patrick Roberts, as he went on to make a deadline day transfer move to Birmingham City from Sunderland.

Speaking on Open Goal, McCormack stated that he only realised Roberts made a move once he saw him coming off the bench and providing a stoppage-time assist, as Birmingham City beat Swansea City in the Championship last week.

Alongside the rest of the Open Goal panel, McCormack thinks Celtic should have re-signed the Hoops hero because he is ‘tailor-made’ for Brendan Rodgers.

“You know what I saw the other day?” said McCormack. “I’m totally surprised at this. I didn’t even know he went there.

“Who set up big Lyndon Dykes winner for Birmingham (against Swansea City)?”

Barry Bannan: “Paddy Roberts.”

McCormack: “Tailor-made for Celtic.  I didn’t know he left Sunderland. I saw him put on the cross for big Dykes’ header. I thought, ‘is there not a conversation there to be had?’”

Paul Slane: “I thought for a few years why Celtic didn’t take a wee nibble on him.”

Roberts’ Celtic career in numbers

Even on a loan deal until the end of the season, Roberts would have been a clever signing, and you wonder why Celtic didn’t knock on the door.

At the age of 28, the versatile forward has probably not reached the heights he would have wanted in his career, but he has had continued success in England’s second tier.

Roberts joined Celtic in 2016 as a fresh-faced teenager and went on to produce some stellar moments in the famous green and white colours.
